What happens at Orientation, and do I have to come?
The Oregon State Board of Nursing requires that all students attend Orientation before signing up for the class. There is no charge for the session. You need to plan to be with us for about one hour. You will be able to ask questions about the program and the school.
If you decide to put off taking a Nurse Assistant 1 course for a time you will not have to attend orientation again as long as you enroll within six months.

Does AHT have evening or weekend classes?
Yes, we have evening classes! At present AHT does not offer weekend classes. Once you take either class and successfully pass the final exam you will be eligible to apply to take the Oregon certification exam.
Does AHT offer a payment plan?
We do not offer a payment plan, but we do accept major credit cards. At orientation you will also hear details about how you might be eligible for tuition reimbursement.
If you are unemployed you may be eligible for a training program through the Employment Dept. Please contact the Employment Dept. for information on how to apply for training funds. The application process can take several weeks.
Will I be a CNA when I successfully complete this course?
Almost! Every graduate will be given all of the necessary forms and information so they can apply to the Oregon State Board of Nursing to take the certification exam. When you pass the OSBN exam they will send you your certificate.
Do you have any other classes available?
Yes! You can continue your training at AHT with our CNA 2 course.
Does this course require a lot of homework?
You will have 1-3 hours of homework every night. If you are an average reader, expect your assignments to take a couple of hours.
Does the school have a dress code?
AHT offers a professional experience from start to finish. Students are required to wear clean, unwrinkled, well-fitting scrubs to class everyday. The scrubs are available at any location of Life Uniforms and other local stores (see our "Resources" page). We suggest that you buy two sets so you will always be prepared. Information about the approved scrubs will be given at Orientation. Further dress code information will also be given at Orientation.
What kind of jobs will I be able to get?
All kinds of doors will open for you once you have your CNA certification. Nursing care facilities, foster homes, assisted living facilities, doctor's offices, hospitals, and home care agencies all rely heavily on CNA's. As you begin a job search you will find that there are employment opportunities outside the normal medical arena as well. For example, some school districts hire CNA's both for office work, as well as for assisting and triaging for school nurses.
What can you tell me about further education or career path opportunities?
Many CNA's take one of two paths--administration or healthcare. Administration consists of care supervisors, planners, food service and operations managers. The healthcare path can lead to CNA 2, Medication Aide, LPN, RN, NP, and on through other high level options.

CNAs are a very valuable part of the medical team. They have serious responsibilities and are required by the Oregon State Board of Nursing to keep their skills and knowledge up to date through continuing education. The OSBN is the only agency that can certify an Oregon Nursing Assistant.
CNAs work under the supervision of licensed nurses in many different settings, including:
Nursing Facilities
Private Homes
Hospice
Hospitals
Doctors Offices
They provide care, and in many cases assist clients with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Their tasks may be associated with:
Personal Care
Mobility
Nutrition and Hydration
Client Safety
Data Gathering
Recording and Reporting
Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA 1) is the first step toward earning a CNA 2 or Medication Aide certification. It is also a fast way to enter the healthcare field and gain valuable experience before deciding to continue your education in a nursing or medical program.
